Nothing Could Be Finah

Rabe Canon looked to his left at Carolina Lee, asleep on the pillow next to his own. Her long butterscotch hair was tousled after the night’s lovemaking. The first wisps of Monday morning light licked at it through the windows of the comfortable little two-bedroom house she found for him near her own next to the Confederate garrison.

The oversized bed, on which even Canon could stretch, was the most comfortable he could remember. But he was not comfortable. He realized he could care a lot for this woman, but he wondered about her and worried.

Canon had enjoyed many women. Here was one he could not fathom. She came willingly enough to his bed left the hospital three weeks ago, and seemed to enjoy their lovemaking. He had never seen a body so lush as hers. But she was shy about her nakedness, would only make love in the dark.

She was passionate. Her climaxes weren’t pretend. But she never really let go the way she seemed capable of doing. At a point when he thought she could have become truly abandoned, as Canon thought lovemaking should be, she would smother her passion. Canon tried everything to draw her out, but affair was cooling. It was more and more difficult to get her to bed.

Canon wondered what made her as she was. She still would not speak of it, and Canon stopped pressing. He was happy to have her with him, but if he knew more about her past, he felt sure he would know why she held herself back.

He watched her now, as the sun rose. She lay on her back, her full breasts pushing up the thin sheet. Carefully, Canon eased the sheet down her body. How magnificent were those breasts! Gently scratching and tickling her nipples, he watched the pink-red points jut out like twin telescopes from pouty crowns until they became bullet shaped spikes.

Her breathing, regular in sleep, deepened until it became ragged and she moaned softly. Her eyelids fluttered and she was awake. She closed her eyes again as Canon leaned over and captured with his mouth the nipple nearest him, still gently fondling the other.

“Rabe, honey, don’t do that, please,” she said softly. “I can’t stand it when you do both of them, and I’ve got to get ready to go to the hospital.” The damned hospital again. In their time together, the only disagreement they had was her insistence on continuing to put in such long hours at the hospital. The place depressed her, and there were plenty of volunteers, but she would not listen. Finally, feeling rotten for trying to take her away from what she obviously considered her duty, Canon desisted.

He understood duty. He was ready to return to it. He owed duty to Stonewall Jackson. The dreams had not returned. No need to. The message, so obvious, had come through immediately when he had let it. It was another thing he could thank Carolina Lee for giving him.
